French High Schools Face Blockades as Student Tensions Escalate
Schools in Paris, Saint-Denis, Grenoble and Lille were among those affected during the morning, according to reports.
Education authorities in Paris said attempts to block entrances had affected nearly 10 of the capital’s 90 high schools.
Tensions also escalated at the Parc-Imperial school complex in the Alpes-Maritimes department, the region’s largest middle and high school, which has approximately 3,000 students.
The situation became more serious when students seeking to prevent access to the school reportedly set electric bicycles on fire, prompting police officers and firefighters to intervene.
The confrontation developed into a standoff involving a large number of students and law enforcement personnel. Officers were reportedly targeted with projectiles before police used tear gas to disperse the crowd.
Security forces were expected to maintain a “very strong and robust” presence outside schools as student demonstrations continued in the Ile-de-France region following protests during the previous week.
The demonstrations have focused on concerns including overcrowded classrooms, demanding schedules and a shortage of teachers.
